Sadly, not all children will be placed in loving homes. Many will reside in babyhouses, orphanages and continue through their early teens living in a dwelling called a "House of Youth". Some children will receive funding for higher education, many will not. At age 16, a determination is made that allows a child to continue until the age of 21 in these government run and funded establishments. Many of these children will turn to the streets, participate in acts of violence, substance abuse/sales, become involved in prostitution and or commit suicide before they reach adulthood. It is our goal to help these children learn life skills, a trade and give them the tools they will need to be survivors. At the age of four, children are moved from the babyhouses which offer greater supervision and care to the orphanages where they are integrated with children as old as twelve. The Headstart program has been set up to address the needs and concerns surrounding the well being of these children.
Our goal is to provide opportunities and structured guidance for the children to teach them to life skills and create a foundation that offers hope for a brighter future. Please help us help the children. Your donation will have long lasting effects in the life of a child.
The Headstart Program is lead by JHA Volunteers who want to make a difference. We are actively raising funds for computer hardware and software that will focus on teaching basic operational skills as well as English as a second language. We would like to provide the children with reading materials and tools to assist them with their studies such as dry erase boards, overhead projectors, documentary and educational films. Lastly, it is our wish to provide vocational opportunities for the children through the construction of a workshop or interactive kitchen at the orphanage which will teach a skill that can be carried forward.
